Categories: Thailand

It seems that the Thai authorities have used the recently passed Computer Crime Act (you can download the document below) to arrest two Thais [1] for alleged offensive comments posted on the Internet about the country’s revered monarch. “At least one person being detained in Bangkok Remand Prison for crimes against the new Computer Crime Act which came into effect on July 18, 2007,” Prachatai [2] reported today:

The detainee is a 36 year-old computer programmer who posted comments on web-boards using a well-known alias. According to the source, the person was detained for 6 days at the Police Crime Suppression Division office before being transferred to the remand prison on August 30.

When contacted by telephone to confirm the arrest
, Information and Communication Technology Minister, Sitthichai Pookaiyaudom [3], said “I don't know about it. And if someone were arrested under the law, I would not be informed.
