Last week it was announced that leading digital rights advocates and bloggers Markus Beckedahl and Andre Meister, along with an “unknown party,” are being investigated for treason for allegedly having leaked documents on the Netzpolitik blog, detailing Germany's plans to expand domestic Internet surveillance earlier this year.

Netzpolitik.org is a critical german investigative blog with more than 30 authors who report mainly on issues concerning Internet surveillance and privacy since 2004. The website was awarded with the well-known Grimme Online Award in 2014. Beckedahl is also a founding director of the popular annual Re:Publica conference in Berlin, which focuses on digital rights and culture.

Global Voices Advox is a partner and friend of Netzpolitik, and we share a common mission to protect and promote freedom of expression on the Internet. Today, our team lends our support to their case by signing a brief statement condemning the charges and demanding an end to the German government's investigation of our colleagues.

The investigation against Netzpolitik.org for treason and their unknown sources is an attack against the free press. Charges of treason against journalists performing their essential work is a violation of the fifth article of the German constitution. We demand an end to the investigation into Netzpolitik.org and their unknown sources.
